Although ROP often resolves without intervention, complications including pathologic neovascularization, hemorrhage, fibrovascular proliferation and retinal detachment can be associated certain classifications of ROP development. Careful monitoring of premature infants and recognition of treatable disease are essential elements in preventing permanent vision loss.
